Lisa Nocentini

Lisa Nocentini was born in Florence, Italy,  in 1955.

She studied at the Istituto Statale d’Arte di Firenze where she obtained a Diploma in Applied Art and later she studied painting and ceramics at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Aix-en Provence, France, and at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence.

During her training as a ceramicist she participated in workshops held by potters David Leach, John Colbeck, Sebastian Blackie, Ruth Ann Tudball, Takeshi Yasuda, Giovanni Cimatti, Walter Keeler, Ian Gregory.

The Amazing Bone is a 1976 New York Times Book Review Notable Children's Book of the Year and Outstanding Book of the Year, a 1977 Caldecott Honor Book, and a 1977 Boston Globe - Horn Book Awards Honor Book for Picture Books.

Bjørn Rune Lie

I found Bjørn Rune Lie's illustrations while looking for inspirations. He is an illustrator who now works in Bristol, England. Many of his illustrations are very graphic, stylized(flattened and organic shapes), and has a great sense of composition. I thought he has great sense of positive and negative space, especially in the black and white illustration, as well as the illustration from the children's book called Slapsefjell(first one). 

Henry's Freedom Box by Kadir Nelson

Kadir Nelson is an illustrator, and a commissioned artist. In this particular book, I found many illustrations that have strong perspectives, and lighting. This one particularly shows that strong perspective and lighting determines the atmosphere and mood of the illustration.

Adam Rex

Adam Rex is someone whose career is pretty diverse. He started out doing primarily fantasy art, and only broke into the children's book industry sometime around 2006. His work is very painterly, but his take on the more traditional side of things is very pretty to look at. 

His book covers, in particular, are very well designed. He even takes the barcode placement into consideration.

He stated once in an interview that his history in fantasy illustration, such as Magic: The Gathering, hurt his entry into children's books. 

It's really cool to see the differences in his technique when handling both fantasy art and children's illustration.

Environments with Paul Goble

Paul Goble has one of those styles that is completely and totally his own--he's very influenced by Native American art, and no one else draws like he does. If you didn't have one of his books as a kid, you were deprived. The first spread's a bit of an exception for him, since most of his storybooks are more like the second and third, with bold colors on white backgrounds. He manages to sum up a whole geographical environment with a few bushes. A very well-deserved Caldecott winner (1979).
