Atmosphere/Mood in The Fountain by David Mack

From the graphic novel The Fountain by artist David Mack. The limited color palate, and loose, energetic, gestural line work all combine to convey an intense atmosphere in the fantastical world the story takes place in.

Rebecca Dautremer

Rebecca Dautremer is a French Illustrator and was born in 1971. She is known for her poetic and humorous children's books, and her use of color to add to the atmospheric mood. Dautremer is one of my favorite illustrators; she has a keen sense of composition and design when it comes to her art.

Nishant Choksi

Nishant Choksi is from London and he uses pencil, paper, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop. His illustrations of primary colors remind me of Communist posters in Russia from 1920's or 30's. The colors are simple yet bold and effective!

Peter Sis Character studies

These are character studies that Peter Sis did for the animated short "You Gotta Serve Somebody" based on Non Dylan's song. It is especially interesting to see multicultural characters as well as characters based on seasons as well(3rd row)!

I thought that this image had a very dynamic composition as well as point of view.  This is a selection from the book Little Red A Fizzlingly Good Yarn retold by Lynn Roberts and Illustrated by David Roberts.  The view point from the top of the shelves down onto Little Red with all the dead animals and food handing from the top of the frame just creates the space so well.  The diagonal lines from the shelves and the shadow of the door keeps our eyes constantly moving, keeping us within the image.

Lisa Congdon has a project called "365 Days of Hand Lettering" and is blogging the whole thing!  Super helpful to anyone who wants to improve their own hand lettering.  {ie me}
